Pivot doors and sliding doors are two completely different opening mechanisms that work differently in an office setting. Choosing between them affects not only the interior’s look, but also space planning, acoustics, and day-to-day comfort of use.
How do pivot doors work?
Pivot doors rotate around an axis placed not at the edge but slightly inset from it – usually around 15–20% of the panel’s width from the edge. This makes the panel “hover” above the floor without traditional side hinges, creating a distinctive, modern visual effect and allowing for very large, heavy glass panels – even full-glass, floor-to-ceiling formats.
How do sliding doors work?
Sliding doors (e.g. in the Glass Magic system) slide parallel to the wall or partition on a top track, without needing extra space for a swing arc. They can be single or telescopic – in which case several panels tuck away one behind the other when opened.
Comparison in an office context
- Space saving: sliding doors don’t need room for a swing arc – important in narrow corridors and smaller offices; pivot doors need free space for the panel to rotate.
- Visual character: pivot doors create an impressive, representative entrance – a good fit for a boardroom or executive office entrance; sliding doors have a more functional, discreet character.
- Frequency of use: in high-traffic spaces (corridors, entrances to open-plan areas), sliding doors usually work better – they open faster and don’t get in the way of foot traffic.
- Acoustics and airtightness: thanks to a full perimeter seal, like in classic doors, pivot doors usually provide better acoustic insulation than sliding systems.
- Large formats: for very large, heavy glass panels, a pivot system often distributes the load more favourably than a long sliding track.
Which solution to choose for an office?
