Self-supporting vs framed glass railings — which to choose?

Choosing between a self-supporting and a framed glass railing is one of the first decisions investors face when planning a glass safety barrier for a terrace, balcony, or staircase. Both constructions serve the same function – protecting against falls while keeping maximum transparency – but they differ in mounting method, required glass thickness, and visual effect. What is a self-supporting railing?

A self-supporting (frameless) railing is a system where the glass is the only structural element. The pane is mounted directly to the floor or to the side of the balcony slab using a fixing profile – no top handrail, no intermediate posts. The glass alone carries the entire load, which is why increased-thickness panes are used, most often laminated VSG glass starting from around 17.52 mm, depending on the railing’s height and calculated loads.

The effect: the glass pane appears to float in the air, with no elements obstructing the view. This solution is popular in modern architecture, on terraces with a view, or in apartments where every centimetre of open space matters.

What is a framed (post) railing?

A framed railing relies on a load-bearing structure – aluminium or steel posts spaced at regular intervals, to which the glass infill is attached. Here the glass fills the panel rather than acting as a structural element, which allows for thinner panes, typically tempered ESG glass or laminated VSG of smaller thickness than in a self-supporting system.

A post structure is usually cheaper to build and easier to install on uneven or long sections, since the posts can compensate for differences in the substrate. Its visible profiles give it a more classic, orderly character.

Comparison – which one to choose?

  • Aesthetics: a self-supporting railing gives an effect of full transparency and minimalism; a framed railing has a clearly defined structure, which some investors see as an asset rather than a drawback.
  • Cost: a self-supporting system requires thicker, more expensive glass and precise mounting – it is usually more costly than a framed solution.
  • Installation: a framed railing adapts more easily to uneven substrates and long terraces; a self-supporting one requires a perfectly prepared slab edge.
  • Safety: both systems, correctly designed and executed to standard, provide full safety – the difference lies in the thickness and type of glass used.
  • Character of the space: a modern, minimalist building – a self-supporting system works better; a traditional or industrial style – often pairs better with a visible frame.
