Windbreak shield systems Vitrada 17.09.2026

A glass windbreak keeps gusts off a terrace or balcony without closing the space or blocking the view. It is most often chosen for terraces on upper floors, corner balconies and anywhere the wind mostly comes from one side.

Variants

  • Fixed glass panels – toughened (ESG) or laminated (VSG) safety glass, in aluminium profiles or with point fixings;
  • Liftable or folding systems – the panels are lifted or folded away when needed, for the full view;
  • Combined with a glass railing – on terraces and balconies with a glass railing, part of the railing can double as a windbreak.

What to consider when planning

  • Wind direction: often it is enough to protect the main wind side – not the whole terrace;
  • Glass: the more exposed the location (upper floors, corner terraces), the more important sufficiently strong glass is;
  • Removability: on some projects a system that can be opened or taken down on calm days is worth considering.

How well a windbreak works depends on the location – building height, terrace orientation and neighbouring buildings. That is why every project starts with photos and measurements, not with a panel from a catalogue. More in our guide How to protect a terrace from wind. If you want to enclose the terrace completely, see our frameless terrace glazing.
