What happens when the glass in a railing breaks? Tempered and laminated glass compared

Glass in a railing rarely breaks, but it happens: a knock from a trolley, something sharp in a pocket of someone leaning on it, a damaged edge or, very occasionally, a material flaw. It helps to know in advance what you will see and whether the railing still protects against a fall. In short: it depends on what kind of glass it is made of.

What you will see when tempered glass breaks

Tempered glass (ESG) has internal stresses that make it several times stronger than ordinary glass. The price is that once it is damaged, it breaks across the whole pane at once. You get a dense mesh of small, blunt pieces. There are no long sharp shards, so the risk of a serious cut is low, but a single pane in a frame can simply fall out.

In a framed railing, where the glass fills the gap between posts and handrail, the structure still stands. What is missing is the pane itself, which means the fall protection. That spot needs to be cordoned off straight away.

What you will see when laminated VSG glass breaks

VSG is at least two panes bonded with an interlayer. When one layer cracks, the pieces stay stuck to the film. The pane looks broken, but it usually stays in place and still holds something back. That is why self-supporting railings, where the glass itself carries the load, use laminated glass, most often made of tempered layers.

ESG and VSG after breakage: comparison

  • Look: ESG gives small crumbs that can spill out; VSG is a cracked but coherent pane.
  • Fall protection: after breaking, ESG usually disappears; VSG usually still holds.
  • When to use: ESG in framed railings; VSG where the glass is load-bearing or where people walk underneath.
  • Replacement: in both cases the cracked pane has to be replaced, even if VSG is still standing.

What to do when you notice a crack

  1. Keep people and pets away from the damaged spot and do not lean on the glass.
  2. Secure the area: tape, a barrier, a chair or similar. With ESG be careful, because crumbs can fall below.
  3. Take photos of the crack and the whole railing, and note when it happened and what may have caused it.
  4. Do not try to glue it or remove the cracked pane yourself.
  5. Contact the manufacturer or installer to replace the pane with the same glass or a safer one.

Choosing glass so that a crack is not a problem

If there is a pavement, a house entrance or a garden where children play below the railing, we choose laminated glass: even cracked, it stays in place. In a framed railing where nothing passes underneath, tempered glass is enough. We describe the differences and prices in the article on ESG and VSG glass for terrace railings, and the requirements in the text on glass railing safety standards.

Frequently asked questions

Can tempered glass break on its own?

It is rare and usually has a cause: a damaged edge, a fixing clamped too hard, or a material flaw. That is why correct fixing and careful handling of the edges during installation matter so much.

Is a cracked VSG pane safe?

It usually keeps standing, but its load capacity is reduced. Treat it as damage to be fixed: secure the area and order a replacement.

Does insurance cover a cracked railing pane?

That depends on the policy. Photos and the date of the incident make a claim easier, but check the terms with your insurer.
