Guillotine Window vs Folding System — Comparison

A guillotine window and a folding (accordion-style, frameless) system are two completely different approaches to glazing an opening – and the choice between them depends mainly on what you need: year-round airtightness or maximum opening in summer. Below we compare both solutions point by point.

How does a guillotine window work?

Our automatic guillotine glass-lifting system works by moving a glass pane vertically upward, hiding it inside the lintel or wall structure – similar to a classic guillotine window known from English architecture, but in an automated, fully glazed version. Once raised, the opening is completely exposed; once lowered, it forms a sealed, vertical glass pane.

How does a folding (accordion) system work?

A folding system is based on several narrow panels connected by hinges, which fold one after another – like an accordion – and tuck away at the side edge of the opening when opened. This solution lets you open almost 100% of the surface, but the panels – even folded – remain visible at the side.

Comparison

  • Airtightness: thanks to a full perimeter seal when closed, a guillotine window provides better thermal and acoustic insulation than a folding system.
  • Degree of opening: a folding system lets you open almost the entire opening; a guillotine window hides the pane within the structure when open, also exposing the opening fully, but it requires space above the opening for the hiding mechanism.
  • Automation: the guillotine system in our offer is automated – raising and lowering happens at the push of a button; the folding system opens and closes manually, panel by panel.
  • Appearance when closed: a guillotine window forms a single, smooth glass pane with no divisions; a folding system has visible vertical joints between panels.
  • Application: guillotine works well where year-round airtightness matters (e.g. restaurant gardens open in winter); folding – where the priority is a fully open terrace or loggia in season.

Which solution to choose?

If you plan to use the glazed space year-round and want thermal comfort, the better choice is an automatic guillotine system. If maximum, seasonal opening of your terrace or garden is the priority, a folding system will work well.
